Colossians and the Holy Spirit of God (Part 7) — Colossians 2:11-23: Not Legalism But Christ
Paul makes clear, by referencing the topic of circumcision, that God had not done away with His law, circumcision was still commanded by God, BUT it had to be "circumcision of the heart" which involved a change for every individual, not just the Jews or proselytes with male genitalia. “God declared through the apostles that physical circumcision is not required for salvation, but rather a spiritual circumcision of the heart that can come only through the grace of Christ and lead the Christian to a life of loving obedience and submission to God.”
This was a change in the administration of circumcision. It was no longer of the flesh, but of the heart. Christ did not do away with God’s law, nor did the apostles. This is very important to understand as we examine the very misunderstood verses of Colossians 2:14-17.
